What is a Sexual Assault Exam?

A Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE) is a medical/forensic exam for evidence preservation after sexual assault, performed by trained Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE). The exam includes swab and sample collection and offers immediate medical care and information on STIs and pregnancy. You can choose to decline any part of the exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

You have the legal right to have an advocate present when filing a report or getting an exam. Call us to connect with an advocate.

  1. You can have a SAFE performed and file a police report.
  2. You can request to have a SAFE performed but choose not to report the assault to the police.
  3. You can receive medical treatment for any injuries and prophylactic treatment for sexually transmitted infections and opt out of having a SAFE performed. Opt in or out of reporting the assault to the police.
  4. You can file a police report but opt out of having a SAFE performed.
  5. You can opt out of medical care and/or police reporting.

There is no cost to the survivor for a forensic exam. If more medical attention is needed, there may be costs associated. For more information, speak to an HCWC advocate.
